As you would imagine, there are a few different things to talk through here. First things first, consider this Brand New Cherry Flavor was billed as a limited series from the start. There was a prevailing sense from the start that this story would have a clearly-defined beginning, middle, and end. That allowed for more creative swings, and also for the entire team to embrace precisely what this is One of the most shocking, gory series that exists on the Netflix platform. when you think about everything that the streaming service actually houses, this is saying quite a bit. Ultimately, there’s no need for a show like this to have a second season, and it remains to be seen if the numbers would even dictate it. Netflix tends to be pretty ruthless on its shows these days, mostly because they don’t necessarily have to at any time. Netflix’s Brand New Cherry Flavor’ is a mind-bending horror that follows Lisa down a drug-induced, dark-magic-infused rabbit hole. Based on the novel of the same name by Todd Grimson, the show’s central character is a budding film director who embarks on an occult revenge scheme when a sleazy Hollywood producer steals her short film. The resulting surreal caper is engrossing, to say the least, and has garnered praise for its unconventional approach and convincing cast. A Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion creation, the show’s opening season ends on a relatively calm note but with clear seeds planted for a potentially explosive follow-up season. So will we get to see more of the show in the future? Here’s everything we know about Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 2. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Release Date Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 1 premiered in its entirety on August 13, 2021, on Netflix. It contains 8 episodes, each with a run time of between 40 and 50 minutes. As far as season 2 is concerned, there have been no official announcements regarding the show’s renewal. Unfortunately, as the show is billed as a limited series, there is a high possibility that one season is all we’re going to get. Of course, there are limited series that are occasionally extended for further seasons. However, so far, there is nothing that points to that being the case with Brand New Cherry Flavor.’ Even wildly popular miniseries like The Queen’s Gambit have not yet seen a renewal, so there are likely many hurdles for the mind-bending horror show to overcome for potential renewal. The story, though seeded with threads that can be picked up and weaved into a compelling plot for future seasons, also closes on a defining note with the central character giving up on her project and returning to her home country. Therefore, there is a certain air of finality in the final episode and a notable absence of a tense cliffhanger that characterizes the season finales of many shows that expect or hope to be renewed. The storyline of the inaugural season of Brand New Cherry Flavor’ also essentially exhausts the story of its source material eponymous book, which again hints at there being only one season of the show. Since Todd Grimson has penned a few other novels, including Stainless A Modern Romance,’ which, like Brand New Cherry Flavor,’ is also based in LA, we could see more adaptations of his work in the future. However, that will likely be under a different title. Taking the aforementioned factors into consideration, Brand New Cherry Flavor’ season 2 is unlikely to get made. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Cast Who can be in it? The show centers around Lisa Nova Rosa Salazar, who has her short film stolen by Lou Burke Eric Lange. She employs the help of the occult, cat-consuming witch Boro Catherine Keener and kills off Lou’s son Jonathan Daniel Doheny. Lisa’s vengeful lead actress who plucks her own eyeball out is Mary Gray Siena Werber, while the lead zombie seen stalking Lisa in the show’s opening episode and then throughout the story as Boro’s minion is Pierre Mark Acheson. Other supporting characters are Lisa’s friend Code Manny Jacinto and his girlfriend Christine Woods Hannah Levien, Joe Darcy Laurie, Jules Jayson Blair, and Alvin Patrick Fischler. Lisa’s unfortunate flame who gets decapitated is Roy Jeff Ward. In case season 2 does get made, most of these actors, except for Ward and Keener’s characters Roy and Boro, will likely reprise their roles. There is also a chance that the creators might rope in a brand new cast in the potential season 2. Brand New Cherry Flavor Season 2 Plot What can it be About? Season 1 follows Lisa as she delves into an occult, drug-induced revenge plot against the wealthy Hollywood producer Lou Burke who steals her short film. In a bid to regain the rights to direct her film, Lisa and her occult accomplice Boro manage to bring chaos into Lou’s life, but the budding director soon finds her own life disturbed by strange occurrences. When she tries to break things off with Boro, it is revealed that the ancient occult being is using Lisa for her own ends and plans on inhabiting her body. The first season of Brand New Cherry Flavor’ ends with Lisa’s loyal friend, along with many others, dying and Boro jumping into the body of Mary, the actress who plays the lead role in Lisa’s short film. In the final moments, Lisa herself discards her project despite the arrival of a new producer, who is intent on helping her. Instead, she leaves LA and returns to her home in Brazil. In a potential season 2, we could see Lisa come to terms with the power of the White Jaguar, which she is hinted to be channeling. Furthermore, she could possibly find out more about her mysterious mother, who appears as a faceless entity in the first season. We could also see Boro, in her new body, embark on another scheme for power and chaos. An entertaining offshoot would be the ancient witch and the vengeful Lou now blind, joining forces to hunt down Lisa together. Adaptée d’un roman de Todd Grimson, la nouvelle série horrifique de Netflix met en scène Rosa Salazar et Catherine Keener dans les bas-fonds d’Hollywood. L’aventure Brand New Cherry Flavor a quelque chose de frais et de bizarre, ne serait-ce que par le CV de sa créatrice et son créateur, Lenore Zion et Nick Antosca. Seul ce dernier avait déjà imaginé une série, l’horrifique Channel Zero 2016-2018. Sa comparse avait bossé comme scénariste dans diverses salles d’écriture, comme celle de Billions, mais le saut en avant que constitue une production Netflix lance le duo dans le grand monde. Il va être question très vite pour Lisa Nova de récupérer son bien et d’assouvir sa soif de vengeance, ce que la série rend possible en changeant littéralement de genre. Le body horror croise finalement la satire du milieu du cinéma, une superposition que la série maîtrise jusqu’à un certain point. Après deux épisodes, Brand New Cherry Flavor peine à réellement faire avancer le récit, plutôt occupée à mettre en avant l’étrangeté de ses personnages sans vraiment nous attacher à elles et eux, sauf par intermittence. Il faut un peu de temps pour s’y faire, mais une fois acceptée l’idée du courant alternatif, on prend un certain plaisir à observer ce jeu de massacre et de références. Dans le réjouissant épisode 4, une référence directe à eXistenZ 1999, le film de Cronenberg, coupe le souffle le petit ami de Lisa pénètre avec le poing un nouvel orifice apparu sur le côté du ventre de la jeune femme. Les plans sont frontaux, le moment résolument provocant et en phase avec le discours de la série, qui lie la créativité de son héroïne à ses expériences physiques. L’Américaine a pourtant 36 ans et une carrière variée derrière-elle Parenthood, American Horror Story notamment mais elle trouve ici un écrin fabuleux pour exprimer sa profondeur et sa liberté, son sens de l’engagement qui donne une intensité aux scènes qu’elle traverse. La parodie se double constamment d’enjeux intimes pour son personnage, grâce à sa manière de ne jamais céder au second degré. Avec Catherine Keener, elles forment un duo assez irrésistible qui donne envie d’en voir encore plus. Ce qui n’est pas gagné. Comme beaucoup de séries actuelles, Brand New Cherry Flavor a été conçue comme une histoire fermée, pour des raisons artistiques peut-être, mais sans doute aussi pour que Netflix n’ait pas à couper les vivres prématurément en cas d’insuccès. The following story contains spoilers for the end of Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix. Horror fans got a real treat with Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor, an eight-part series set in the cutthroat world of early '90s Hollywood. Our story here follows Lisa Nova Alita Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar, a young filmmaker looking to expand her groundbreaking short film into a major motion picture. Along the way she meets sleazy-but-talented producer Lou Burke Eric Lange, a rising star actor Jeff Ward, and an eccentric woman who...is basically a witch the great Catherine Keener. The story is the best kind of horror—basic enough to follow, but with enough disgusting, David Cronenberg-esque body horror, and enough what the fuck? style David Lynch existentialism to really make you question just about every minute of what you just watched. Salazar has a rough edge to her protagonist that makes us root for her just enough, while Lange channels his inner Jeff Goldblum to play the slimy-but-charismatic type of Hollywood producer we've all heard so much about. The series gets increasingly gross and violent as it moves along, but when it finally reaches its conclusion, you may have one simple question what's next? Brand New Cherry Flavor is based on a novel, and while Season 1 only barely gets into the novel's storyline less than 100 pages in, to be precise, it changes enough that the story, really, is not following any sort of source material anymore outside of the basics. Could it pull a The Leftovers and expand its footprint far beyond the existing story? We'll have to see. Brand New Cherry Flavor isn't likely to have a Season some threads are left open that could certainly be expanded upon in a potential Season 2—Boro taking on a new body, Lisa going to Brazil, Lou still being alive but blind—every piece of branding in the show's marketing campaign has referred to Brand New Cherry Flavor as a "limited series." In full, the show's official poster and on Netflix's platforms it's called "A Netflix Limited Series," which pretty definitively means the story that was meant to be told got told. Now, that's not to say it definitely won't come back. Netflix called The Queen's Gambit a limited series, but many in that show's cast have teased a potential return. But Netflix has mostly kept to its 'Limited Series' promise with shows, with When They See Us, Unbelievable, and Godless as a few other key examples. If you look over to Netflix's rival, HBO, though, there's a bit more precedent, as initially-planned limited series including Big Little Lies, True Detective, and, most recently, The White Lotus, have all gotten eventual Season 2 pickups. In short we've probably seen the end of this story—but you never WEISMILLER WALLACE/NETFLIXThere could be more where Brand New Cherry Flavor came from, though. While Brand New Cherry Flavor seems likely to be a one-and-done series on Netflix, creator Nick Antosca has long focused on telling short and contained horror stories. Before he moved to Netflix with Cherry Flavor, he resided over SyFy's Channel Zero, another very dark and often disturbing horror series that told four distinct stories over the course of its four seasons on air. He also was the showrunner of Hulu's Emmy-winning The Act, which told its Mundchausen by Proxy story in one limited season. He's even a 2009 Shirley Jackson Award winner for Best Novella for Midnight Picnic. In short? The man knows how to write a scary story, and wrap it up on his own clock. Does that not sound similar to another major horror player for Netflix? Mike Flanagan has evolved into one of the biggest names in horror over the last decade, and while he's had successful movies in theaters like Doctor Sleep and Ouijia Origin of Evil, its been his Netflix series that have really taken off. The Haunting of Hill House was a smash when it first landed in 2018, and its follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor was a similar success in 2020. Flanagan's next, Midnight Mass, is hitting Netflix next month with another series, The Midnight Club, currently in production. Which is to say if Brand New Cherry Flavor winds up hitting on Netflix—and with strong early returns critically, it should—it could be a great opportunity for the streaming giant to give Antosca the Flanagan treatment, and just let him keep telling whichever terrifying, creepy, single-season-contained stories he wants to.
